Cosmetic Dentistry guide

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry has been a help to many people in recent years as they have had problems with their teeth corrected, and teeth which were ordinary now look great. The role of the cosmetic dentist has come to the fore for two main reasons. Firstly, cosmetic dentistry has a lot more to offer than it did ten years ago. New dental techniques mean that cosmetic dentists can now repair dental problems which only a few years ago the patient had to live with. The second reason why cosmetic dentistry is becoming more popular is that more patients can afford the treatment.

A visit to the cosmetic dentist used to be the preserve of the rich and famous, or those whose insurance companies paid out following an accident. Now, cosmetic dentistry is available to a wide cross-section of people.

The following techniques are a sample of those used in modern cosmetic dentistry.

Tooth Whitening
As we eat, drink and smoke, our teeth become discoloured and stained. A cosmetic dentist can whiten your teeth by bleaching them. He may do this in his dental surgery, or he may prescribe the chemicals for you to do this at home. Ensure you do this under the guidance of a qualified cosmetic dentist. Chemicals are advertised via the Internet, but may cause gum irritation if they are not used correctly. Cosmetic dentistry should be left to the professionals.

Dental veneers are thin shell like covers which are attached to the front of the teeth. Cosmetic dentistry can now cover even permanently stained or discoloured teeth. The dental veneers can be shaped to look natural and cover all sorts of dental blemishes.

Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a replacement tooth or teeth which your cosmetic dentist can use to fill a gap in your teeth. The bridge is usually fixed to your existing teeth.

Dental Bonding
This branch of cosmetic dentistry is the bonding or application of tooth colored material to the surface of the tooth. The cosmetic dentist will use it to cover chips of blemishes on the tooth surface.

Dentures
Dentures are used by a cosmetic dentist to replace teeth which are missing. Dentures differ from bridges in that they are held in place on the gum by adhesive, rather than being attached to the adjoining teeth. Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way, and dentures now blend in with original teeth much more successfully than in the past.

As you can see, cosmetic dentistry has a lot to offer the patient in returning or creating a perfect smile, and your cosmetic dentist can improve your life greatly and give you confidence in smiling.
